n-Butane is a nonpolar four-carbon alkane with the molecular formula C4H10. It is a gas at standard temperature and can be compressed to liquid for easy transport. n-Butane is a by-product of natural gas processing and petroleum refining.  One of its many uses is for cannabinoid extraction.  Similar to isobutane and propane, n-butane is one of a group of liquefied petroleum gases (LPG).

Using n-butane as the extraction solvent creates what is often referred to as butane hash oil (BHO).   With a low boiling point, 30.2°F (-1°C), using butane gives the extractor the ability to extract larger quantities and higher quality cannabinoids and terpenes while leaving unwanted byproducts behind.  n-Butane’s low, 30.2° F (-1°C), boiling point indicates minimal heat to evaporate (burn) and makes it easier to extract trapped residual solvent selectively.  The vacuum turns the butane from liquid to vapor, making it easier to remove.  For example, when using a desiccator and a vacuum to remove any residual solvent. The n-Butane will start evaporating. When a vacuum is introduced, the pressure will drop, which results in a phase change from liquid to vapor, speeding up the removal of the solvent from the end product.  This allows the operator to extract specific components such as cannabinoids and terpenoids and preserved them at their maximum availability.  Colder extractions make lighter extracts that lack many of the fats and lipids present in other extraction methods.  This property is the key and most important feature in preserving the natural state and the aromatic and chemical complexities of the original plant.  The n-butane solvent can also be converted back to liquid form by either reducing the temperature and/or increasing the pressure.
